International Students

International students have additional requirements for applying to Southern and traveling to the United States as a student.

Acceptance to Southern for international students is granted by the Admissions Committee, which reviews the student's academic preparation, finances, and English proficiency. Health and character may also be considered.

In addition to the general requirements for admission, international students must submit the following:

Academics

  • College transcripts, if applicable
  • TOEFL
  • GCE scores, if applicable
  • Essay answering the following questions:
    • Why do you want an education in the United States?
    • Why did you choose Southern Adventist University?
    • Is the same education available in your homeland?
    • Do you have a special job or position in mind for which your proposed education in the United States will prepare you?
    • Are you planning to return to your homeland when you have completed your education?

NOTE: Both High School and College transcript must be evaluated by World Education Services (WES).

Finances

  • Declaration of Finances form
  • Letter from financial sponsor(s), including name and address
  • Copies of bank statements for last three months showing balance history for your account or your financial sponsor's account
  • International deposit of $3,000USD

Canadian Students

Canadian students must meet the general requirements for admission. In addition, the following must be submitted:

Immigration Form I-20 and F-1 Student Visa

Once you are accepted for admission as a full-time student, the I-20 is issued for you by Southern Adventist University. You then obtain a student visa (F-1) by presenting the I-20 at the United States/Canada border.

Student Visa Regulations

Students entering the United States on a student visa must:

  • Provide proof of ability to pay tuition, university, and living expenses while in the United States.
  • Register for and maintain at least a full course of study (12 undergraduate or 9 graduate credit hours) each semester.
  • Obtain permission from the international student adviser if it is necessary to drop below full-time credit hours.
  • Accept only on-campus employment of up to 20 hours per week after registration of classes.
  • Report address changes within 10 days to the Records Office.

United States immigration laws require that international students return to their home country after completing their university education.

 

ESL Students

Southern Adventist University offers a limited number of classes in ESL to international students who would like to pursue a college degree but are only at an intermediate level of speaking, writing, and reading in English. View more ESL details.

 

ESL Entry Requirements

Southern provides ESL classes on the intermediate and advanced levels to help students prepare for regular university classes in English.

  • Intermediate Level - A minimum score of 45 on the TOEFL test (TOEFL Paper-based 450) is required. Students take 3 credit hours of non-ESL classes for elective college credit.
  • Advanced Level - A minimum score of 61 on the TOEFL test (TOEFL Paper-based 500) is required. Students take 6 credit hours of non-ESL classes for elective college credit.

 

 

Academic Transcripts

Official transcripts of all school work must be submitted to Enrollment Services. Certified English translations (not an interpretation) must accompany original transcripts in other languages. In addition, all transcirpt must be evaulated by World Education Services (WES). Academic departments may require examinations for transfer-course credit in the student's major or minor. Academic documents are evaluated according to the guidelines in Patterns of Seventh-day Adventist Education (General Conference publication) and World Education (published by the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers).

Academic Standing

Students may be admitted to first-year standing by presenting the following: School Certificate (Cambridge or Malaysia) plus Lower Form VI, or present Upper Form VI without the Higher School Certificate (Cambridge or Malaysia) with two principal A-level passes, or one principal A-level and two subsidiary O-level passes. Five or more ordinary level O-GCE passes (with marks 1 to 6 or A to D) with proper distribution of subjects including English, a natural science, and three others selected from: a second language, mathematics, science, or social studies.

After You’ve Been Accepted to Southern

Immigration Form I-20 and F-1 Student Visa

  • Provide Southern with dates of planned arrival in the United States and at Southern Adventist University
  • Photocopy of passport identification page
